INTRODUCTION:
ReplyDeleteSixteen year old Julilly is taken from her home and brought to America, where she is forced into slavery. One night her mother tells her of a place called Canada where all the black people get to live in a house and be free from slavery. Her Mom tells her never to tell any white Americans about this land.
RISING ACTION:
A fat slave trader named Simms is buying slaves for his plantation in a place that slaves call, "the dreaded south". Julilly is torn away from her mother and taken away with five other children and two men. They are now on a wagon to the dreaded south.
CLIMAX:
Julilly is put into the cotton fields and meets a hunched over slave, named Liza. Julilly needs to pick one hundred pounds of cotton by the end of the day, but she is usually finished by early afternoon. This gives her time to help out Liza. The next day, a Canadian named Mr. Ross is coming to birdwatch. He takes Lester and Adam, two men from Julilly's old plantation in Virginia. That night during dinner, Lester tells Julilly that they are meeting in the forest at midnight because Mr. Ross is actually here to free the slaves. He wants Julilly and Liza to come with him at midnight.
FALLING ACTION:
Julilly and Liza get to the forest and they escape in the swamps. Mr. Ross said for them to get to the Tennessee border and he or another Canadian will be there to take you north. He says to everyone that there is a secret password you need to remember, which is "Friends with a friend". When they get to the border, another man is there and says that Mr. Ross was caught and put in jail. He takes them to an abandoned barn which has food in it. That night, Lester and Adam get caught and taken back to Mississippi. Julilly and Liza make their way through the mountains and up into the outskirts of Cincinnati. They meet a free black man, named Jeb Brown, and he takes them across the Ohio River. They are now in Cleveland and are getting on a boat to cross Lake Erie into Canada.
CONCLUSION:
The girls make it across Lake Erie safely and are headed towards St. Catherines, Ontario in a carriage. When they arrive, Julilly's mother is there and so is Lester.
